Scampi
vessels are about 25 metres long and have a crew of 5 to 6 persons.
They spend up to a month at sea fishing the waters as far south as
the Auckland Islands (55 degrees South), in waters of up to 600 metres
in depth.
They catch Scampi which is processed and packaged ready on board for
export largely to Japan and Europe.
Simunovich Fisheries operates 5 full time Scampi vessels, Albatross
II, Mutual Enterprise, Christmas Creek, Enemelay and Drysdale and a
larger (40 metre) vessel, the Petersen, which also operates in other
fisheries.
